How to choose the perfect ring?

There is no doubt that the one piece of jewellery at the centre of attention on your wedding day is the wedding ring, which has a sentimental value, and the couple are bound to wear for many years to come. Another piece of jewellery that requires thought is the engagement ring – and choosing the right ring is a big decision
So how to choose the ring that symbolises your love and commitment? We asked the talented jewellery designer Omer Mashiach for some inside information on how to choose a timeless wedding ring and to tell us a little about the hot trends for the upcoming year:

What are the engagement and wedding ring trends of 2021?

I feel that in recent years there has been a change in the way jewellery is being perceived. More people understand that it’s easier to break boundaries these days, and it’s possible to let a designer create a more unique ring, in line with the wearer’s personality.
Major trends for 2021 are slightly contrasting extremes – one trend favours clean lines and more of a geometric structure, while the second trend is more about raw visibility which puts the material first. An important principle in both trends is the thought of eternity. Today, people understand that a piece of jewellery is an item for life, to pass through generations, so they no longer follow temporary trends.”

How do you choose an engagement ring?

“Today’s world is based on changes, everything is easy to exchange and replace. So is our perception of changing our jewellery on a daily basis to match it to our daily outfit and style. Therefore it’s important to pay attention to two main things while choosing an engagement ring. First we want a ring that will always suit us, for example, if I know I like to frequently change my hand jewellery, I will choose a ring that will go well with the other jewellery style I like. The other thing you should do is let your emotions help you choose. there is a connection between man and matter – so when choosing a ring it’s necessary to feel that it completes us, it is a part of us. Especially when it comes to a ring that we don’t plan to change, it’s preferable to choose the one that feels most “natural” to us. “

Does size matter or is the minimalist trend still relevant?

”In my personal opinion, size doesn’t matter, what matters is the design – the connection between the stone, the ring and the person. In recent years, the world of engagement rings is divided in the sense of whether size matters or not. There will always be those who have dreamed since they were little girls about a big rock on their finger and this will be an important factor for them when choosing a ring, however there is more attention also to whatever is holding the stone. The other half is less about the size of the stone but its shape and the structure of the ring itself.
Many girls have started breaking the rules when it comes to engagement rings and they want the different, the unique. For that reason we see more “architectural” structural, ring designs – with the use of a princess cut, or rectangular diamond, and sometimes not one stone but playing around with different stones in different sizes. There is even a trend of using an entirely different stone – for example, a few customers actually wanted a black diamond and it turned out to be amazing. In both cases, in my opinion, minimalism is no longer the most prominent trend today. the lines are still the same clean lines we associate with minimalism, but the structure is moving towards a more complex place with more character.”

What is important to take into consideration when choosing a wedding ring?

These days, a wedding ring is not the only ring we wear, so it’s important to choose a ring that will go well with other rings and even with rings made of different materials.
The beauty and properties of silver is more noted now, not only gold, and many people love to combine the two materials. Silver rings are usually more massive and their design is more prominent and bold. Therefore it’s important to note that we choose a wedding ring that will blend naturally with other rings.
There are those who even dare and combine several rings on the same finger – in that case, I would choose a thinner ring. If you want to wear only one ring, you can choose a clean classic ring (usually suitable for people who are not used to wearing jewellery at all), or if you like jewellery but not too prominent, dare and choose a slightly more designed ring. However do not follow trends but choose a ring with both a unique and timeless design.
If you are to choose a designer, try choosing someone who you relate to his work and preferably also to his/her personality, explain what you would like and give them the freedom to design. If it’s important to the customer to be involved in the design process, the ring will not reach the same level that the designer can reach if working on it himself – have trust in him. “

Which wedding rings are timeless and will always stay trendy?

The plain and clean rings with a round or flat surface. However, it is important to know that even on the classic rings you can add a texture that will give it a different character. A texture boosts up the design as well as brings a feeling of personal connection to the wearer because we chose something that we relate to.”

On Omer and his brand

With two beautiful collections under his belt, Omer Mashiach is an exceptionally talented jewellery designer with a different approach to design.

Originally an interior designer who graduated from Shenkar, College of Engineering, Design and Art, Omer started designing jewellery after working for years in the areas of interior design, architecture, graphic and furniture design. He looks at the creative process in a slightly different way and strongly believes in giving in to the raw material, while letting it be a major partner, if not the leader, in the creative process. This way he is able to reach his customers in a unique way through his jewellery and influence their daily lives.

Defeated by the hectic pace of life in Tel Aviv, he decided to take a break, travel the world and study jewellery design – for the soul – that’s when he fell in love. For him, jewellery design complemented his desire for direct contact with the material and brought him a closer connection to the completed creation.

In 2018 he founded Studio be. om, where he creates handmade jewellery that symbolises the same point in the timeline: a necessary break from the demanding routine in which most of us live. Through the jewellery, the wearer is reminded to stop and breathe, to observe and to be present in the moment. The brand was born out of the thought of the balance between the visual and the mental with a unique design concept which naturally combines comfort and practicality. The jewellery designs are mostly unisex and suitable for both sexes, while each piece has its own source of inspiration with a design concept that is inspired by both minimalistic lines and massive materials.
