In an era where digital connections often overshadow personal interactions, the value of face-to-face bonding time has never been more crucial. Companies, big and small, scattered across the globe, find themselves navigating the challenge of keeping the human touch alive amidst the digital hustle. The solution? A corporate retreat that goes beyond the ordinary — a chance to reconnect, recharge, and rediscover the team spirit in a setting that’s as inspiring as it is historic.
That’s where we come in. Picture this: your team, soaking up the sun in Athens, Greece, embarking on a journey that’s part work, part adventure, and entirely unforgettable. We’re talking 45 team members, three days, and one ancient city that serves as the perfect backdrop for stories you’ll be telling for years to come. From the cobblestone streets echoing with history to the tantalising flavours of traditional Greek cuisine, our recent 3-day corporate retreat in Athens was nothing short of legendary.
Curious for a behind-the-scenes glimpse into what makes these retreats a must-have in your corporate calendar?
Arrival in Athens
Our adventure began with the group’s arrival in Athens. The excitement was palpable as we headed to our accommodations, eager to experience the city’s famous hospitality.
Relaxing into Greek Life
After some time to relax and freshen up, we took a leisurely stroll through the streets. The vibrant energy of Athens, with its blend of history and modernity, was the perfect introduction to our retreat.
Evening: A Feast in Plaka
After welcome drinks in the hotel Lobby, a 5* hotel at the foothill of the Acropolis. We embarked on foot for our first night’s entertainment.
The highlight of our first day was dinner at a traditional Greek tavern in the charming, historical Plaka district: this area’s quaint streets and neoclassical architecture set a magical backdrop. The evening was filled with an endless array of delectable Greek dishes, live music, and even some traditional Greek dancing. It was an immersive experience that helped us to relax, as we got acquainted with our colleagues from around the world.
Sirtaki insight:
Choosing Plaka was intentional. Its historical charm and lively ambiance provided a traditional Greek welcome experience, making it more than just a dinner but a memorable event.
Morning Graffiti Tour
After a wholesome breakfast in the hotel, day two got underway with a graffiti tour, showcasing Athens’ vibrant street art scene. Our guide led us through colourful alleys, introducing us to the city’s artistic soul, off the beaten tracks. It was fascinating to see how contemporary artists express themselves on this ancient city’s canvas.
Sirtaki insight:
For a city which is known for its ancient history, we wanted to showcase the city’s modern pulse. The street art tour reveals a different facet of Athens, highlighting its dynamic and creative spirit.
Canvas Bag Workshop
Engaging in a canvas bag spray-painting workshop not only sparked their creativity but also fostered team collaboration in a fun and relaxed setting. As a team, they would not say they are a particularly creative bunch so it was a great way for them to step out of their comfort zones, challenge themselves and create a unique souvenir which will serve as a reminder. After some initial trepidation everyone really got into the swing of things and by the end we all wanted to create multiple items and didn’t want to leave.
Sirtaki insight:
Artistic activities like this workshop encourage creative thinking and teamwork, crucial elements for a successful corporate retreat. Making your own takeaway is also a bonus. As adults it’s a great way to connect with your inner child, taking pride and a sense of accomplishment in producing something from scratch.
Lunch and Leisure
We headed for a delightful lunch in a stylish city centre restaurant, where local wines and modern mezze dishes kept flowing until we could fit no more! After which, we each enjoyed some free time in our own way, some of us choosing to relax back at the hotel, while others ceased the opportunity to explore some of Athens’ ancient wonders, or take a stroll through the local markets.
Sirtaki insight:
Balancing structured activities with free time is essential. It offers participants the opportunity to relax and explore personal interests, enhancing their overall experience.
Evening: Party time
Our second night was all about celebration, with cocktails, dancing, and fusion food in a place that we may never have stumbled upon had it not been for the inside knowledge of a local planner. This was the case with all the locations actually. The places we visited were hidden gems, down a road you would never have thought twice about venturing.
Sirtaki insight:
A night of fun and dance is vital for team bonding. It allows everyone to unwind and connect on a more personal level. Showcasing locations which we have enjoyed finding and experiencing for ourselves first, is a great way to share local knowledge and add value to a trip.
Food and Drink Tour
Our final day was a tribute to Greek cuisine. We embarked on a food and drink tour, tasting our way through various Athenian delights. From savoury pastries, cheese, meats and wines to sweet treats, each bite was a discovery.
Sirtaki insight:
Food is a universal language. Culinary tours not only introduce participants to local flavours but also foster shared experiences that are crucial for team bonding.
Farewell with a Greek Mezze Lunch
The tour concluded with a mezze-style lunch in a bustling canteen, packed with locals spilling out onto the streets – you know what they say – go where the locals go – they know best! A fitting end to our gastronomic journey. As we shared dishes, we reminisced about the past days’ adventures and the connections which had been made.
Departure with Lasting Memories
As the attendees began to depart, it was clear this retreat was about more than business. It was a journey into the heart of Greek culture, filled with art, history, and camaraderie. Athens, leaving them with memories to cherish and stories to share back home.
Reflecting on the retreat from our perspective as event coordinators, the success of this venture lay in meticulous planning, a deep understanding of the destination, and a commitment to creating experiences that resonate on a personal and collective level. Our goal was always to ensure that each participant left with not only a richer sense of team spirit but also a profound connection to the rich heritage of Athens.
If your company seeks a retreat that blends professional development with cultural immersion, our team is ready to craft an experience that your team will talk about for years to come.
