The perfect menu for the perfect event

Selection of traditional Greek appetizers, stuffed grape leaves, and octopus on a decorated table in Greece, inspiration for a Mediterranean wedding menu by Sirtaki Events.

How to choose a menu for your event?

Food is one of the most important things in our lives, it comforts and excites us and most importantly – makes us happy, especially at events. Food is a key theme in the process of organizing an event.

Whether you are planning a wedding, a company event, or any other event, food evokes a sense of anticipation and helps create an atmosphere. For the guests, the food can make the difference between an event they have loved and will remember for a long time, and an event they would rather forget.
Therefore when choosing a menu it is important to take a number of things into consideration so that our event will be well remembered.

So how can you choose a winning menu that will suit the tastes of your guests and send them home happy and satisfied? In general you should follow the simple guideline –  if you love the menu, your guests will probably enjoy it too! Here are some tips that can help:

Choosing the concept

When choosing a menu concept it is important first to understand the event concept and how it’s structured. Where are the points where the guest eat? and what activities they experience – such as when the party starts, or if there is a lecture – it is important to keep a balance and make sure that the food does not affect the guests’ ability to move and enjoy but it is also important to make sure they are full and satisfied.

Secondly, it is important to distinguish the theme, and type of design that guides the event. Whether it is a rustic or modern event, whether the dress code is formal or casual. Even a choice of the event colours can help make the culinary choices.

The best way to decide on the menu is by thinking of your guests and making sure it will suit them. It’s always best to keep the guests in mind beyond your personal desires and understand who they are – is there a large percentage of vegans, are there allergens, are there many children? Although it is not always possible to please everyone, if there is a large percentage of a certain audience type, you need to be able to accommodate it and certainly take it into consideration when choosing the food

Trends – yes or no?

The events world is always in sync with current trends. For example – healthy food is no longer just a trend, for many people, it’s already a way of life. Healthy food gives us a wide range of options at the event and shows the guests that a lot of thought has been invested into selecting the menu. The current variety and selection of fresh vegetables and raw products gives chefs a lot to work with in creating special dishes.

What cuisines will we see at events this year?

Small and personal portions of street food is definitely the star trend in recent years. We can see it at events with small food stalls, bite-sized dishes and even street food instead of the traditional buffet stands.

If you have a diversity of guests at your event, you can mix different cuisines in the same event, however it is very important to try and keep a theme to keep it in line with the concept.

That means, if it is a black tie, formal event – a mini-burger food station right next to a caviar food station would not be the right thing to do. But if you pre-select a fusion menu you can easily make combinations that can work – for example, the hamburger will be replaced by an Asian bun stuffed with beef stew and the caviar will be replaced by a pickled fish stand.

Sweet memory

Amazing desserts are the perfect way to end any event. The dessert is the “Grand Finale”, the sweet taste that ends the culinary journey of the event. As with the rest of the menu, when choosing the theme, think about the guests and choose desserts that are tailored to your audience.

Take into consideration the number of guests, how many children and how many adults, and if there are any allergies or intolerances to certain foods. Here, too, it is worth trying to think about what the guests would like, and provide a variety in terms of flavors with desserts that will give guests an extraordinary experience and a sweet memory of the event
